About FRED

Free economic data from the St. Louis Fed: rates, inflation, employment and many more series, with charts and an API.

FRED, short for Federal Reserve Economic Data, is a free database run by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. It collects economic series from many public sources, including interest rates, inflation, employment, GDP and housing data, and keeps their history in one place.

Investors use it to chart the economic backdrop for a sector or to pull series into a model. Every series page shows its source, units and update schedule, which helps when you need to cite a figure.

You can download data, build and share charts, and use the free API with a key. There is also an add-in for Excel. Some series are revised after release, so note the date you pulled them. Economists and journalists cite FRED charts widely, so its series are a common shared reference when you discuss the economy with others.
